WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 2008--Phase Forward
(NASDAQ: PFWD), a leading provider of data management solutions for
clinical trials and drug safety, today announced that its customer,
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is a winner of CIO magazine's 2008 CIO
100 award. The annual award program recognizes organizations around
the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and
strategic excellence in information technology (IT).
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is the administrative center of the
Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, the largest cancer center in the
world, with more than 1000 faculty-level scientists performing
clinical, basic and population research.
The Institute won the award for an initiative that involved the
transition from paper-based tracking of clinical trial data to a
software-based system using Phase Forward's InForm(TM) Integrated
Trial Management software. The Institute is a principal teaching
affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and is among the leading
cancer research and care centers in the United States.
"Our IT organization is honored by this recognition of our work in
moving to electronic data capture (EDC) for clinical trials," said
Jeffrey Kessler, chief information officer, Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute. "EDC has reduced the time to access data from as much as
eight weeks to real-time, and decreased the time to resolve queries
from weeks to hours. This translates to more meaningful study
results."
"The CIO 100 honors organizations that have used technology in
innovative ways to generate value to the business," said Abbie
Lundberg, editor in chief of CIO magazine. "Unlike other top lists,
it's not just about who's biggest - it's about who's doing the most
interesting and relevant things."
To date, the Institute has implemented 65 studies using Phase
Forward's InForm software. These studies have been implemented across
seven disease areas and involve more than 2,000 subjects. The
organization's InForm users are located in the U.S., Puerto Rico,
Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
One of the largest EDC projects undertaken to date is a
500-subject, five-year pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)
study. A total of 50 electronic forms must be completed across eight
visits for each patient in the study, totaling 77,500 data points for
the whole trial. Automating a study of this scope helps to improve
timely access to information, data accuracy and study integrity.
"Dana-Farber has been aggressive and systematic in its migration
from paper to electronic data capture for clinical trials, and the
organization is reaping the benefits of those efforts," said Bob
Weiler, president and CEO of Phase Forward. "We are delighted to see
this recognition for such a deserving team."

About the CIO 100
The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through
a three-step process. First, companies filled out an online
application form detailing their innovative practices in both business
and IT. Next, a team of judges reviewed the applications in depth,
looking for unique practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO
editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final
100.
Complete coverage of the 2008 CIO 100 awards is in the August 15
issue of CIO magazine and available online at www.cio.com. The awards
will be presented at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on
August 26 at the conclusion of the tenth annual CIO 100 Symposium and
Awards Ceremony.
